The variation of the polarization profiles, the Stokes parameters Q and*U*, and the angle defining the plane of polarization along the intensity equator and along the mirror meridian, on which*μ = μ*_{0}, in a Rayleighscattering atmosphere is studied. It is found that these variations are more complex than thought hitherto, particularly at large phase angles.

Photoelectric radial-velocity measurements show that HD 121844 is a spectroscopic binary with a period of 303 days, a high eccentricity (0.49) and a high negative γ-velocity (- 61 km s^{-1}).

## Propagation of the electromagnetic ion-cyclotron wave in a fusion plasma

The propagation of the electromagnetic ion-cyclotron wave in a fusion plasma described by a loss-cone structure is discussed. The wavelength is assumed to be much larger than the ion Larmour radius and the ion plasma frequency ≫ the ion-cyclotron frequency. The two modes that propagate in the plasma interact strongly and fuse together under certain conditions making the plasma unstable. The coalescence of the modes is found to decrease with an increase in electron temperature.

Photoelectric radial-velocity measurements show that HD 116378 is a spectroscopic binary with a period of 17.76 days. The visual companion star is not physically related to it.

## Lattice sum of electric field gradients in tetragonal crystals

A new method to calculate the lattice contribution to electric field gradients at a nuclear site in tetragonal crystals is developed. The crystal is regarded as an assembly of positive ions at lattice points embedded in a uniform background of negative charge (point charge model). The method uses Euler-Maclaurin formula and makes the plane-wise summation in the direct crystal space unlike most of the previous methods utilising Fourier transform to reciprocal space. The numerical values obtained using the above approach agree well with previous results.

## Jet produced by collapse of conical free surface of a metal by plane shock wave

Theoretical and experimental investigations of metal-jets, produced by interaction of a plane shock wave with a conical cavity at free surface of metals like aluminium, copper and mild steel, have been carried out and an attempt has been made to correlate the jet velocity with shock parameters. The velocity of the jet, obtained from the cavity of different half angles have been mostly measured with oscillographic technique. The experimental results agree with theory within experimental variations. The velocity of the jet increases monotonically with the particle velocity but decreases with increase in the angle of the cavity.

## Connectivity constant of the kagomé lattice

From the computation of self-avoiding walks on the kagomé lattice, its connectivity constant is found to be 2·569 ± 0·008.

## On the virial coefficients of the equation of state of a system of non-axial molecules

A thermodynamic perturbation theory in which all angle-dependent interactions are considered as a perturbation of the central potential is applied to calculate the second and third virial coefficients of a fluid composed of non-axial molecules. The influence of a large number of anisotropic pair- and three-body non-ādditive interactions has been considered. Experimental values have been used for the dipole moment, quadrupole tensor and for anisotropic polarizability. The parameters for the central Lennard-Jones (12-6) potential have been determined from the viscosity data. The relative contribution of each branch of pair and triplet interactions has been evaluated as a function of temperature for molecules possessing both the axial- and non-axial symmetries. It has been shown that the non-axial approximation is an improvement over the axial one. Theoretical results have been compared with the experimental data of CH_{3}OH.
